Google Analytics
Create Google Analytics Account, if you don’t have one.
When logged into Google Analytics, Click Admin -> Data Streams (see above)
Set up a ‘New Website Data Stream’
Fill in the website URL, Stream name and ensure to enable Enhanced measurement (see above)
From the newly created data stream, copy the Measurement ID from the top right corner
(see above)
Google Tag Manager
Create a Google Tag Manager Account, if you don’t have one.
When logged onto Google Tag Manager, Click ‘Variables’ from the left navigation menu.
Whilst viewing the Variables screen, click ‘Configure’ on the top right.
Enable Variables; Tick all the options for Pages, Utilities, Clicks, Forms, Videos and Scrolling
Now from the left navigation click ‘Tags’
When on the tag screen click ‘New’ to add a new tag. A screen like below will appear:
Rename the untitled tag to something like ‘GA4 install/Google Analytics 4 install’. Click the Tag Configuration Box,
Select ‘Google Analytics: GA4 Configuration’
In the Measurement ID field, copy and add the Measurement ID from Google Analytics 4
Now Click the ‘Triggering’ box and select ‘All Pages’
The new tag should look like the screen above and now click ‘Save’.
Once that is done, click Submit in the top right corner, a screen like below will appear:
In the Version Name fill in ‘GA4 install’ and then click ‘Publish’ in the top right corner.
Now that the changes have been published click the ‘GTM-ID’ link shown above and screen like below will appear:
Copy the code required for the <head> as highlighted above.
Retail Store
On retail store, navigate to the websites’ Content Manager,
Websites -> Website Administration > Content Manager
Click the ‘Header’, then ‘Create new HTML content’.
In the ‘Section Title’ add ‘Google Analytics Install’.
Untick ‘Display title on site’ and remove any information from the ‘Add CSS Classes’ field.
Now click ‘HTML’ and copy the code from Google Tag Manager.
Once that’s done, click ‘Update’ then ‘Save and Close’.
For the ‘Google Analytics Install’ section, Set the order to ‘0’, tick ‘Set Live’ and then ‘Save/Apply Changes’.
Google Analytics 4 set up for Retail Store is now complete.
Test
To test that Google Analytics and Google Tag Manager are working;
First refresh your browser, as any change to the html in retail store requires a browser refresh to see the change.
Open the homepage of your website and Google Analytics in another tab.
When logged into Google Analytics navigate to the Real Time reports;
Reports -> Realtime
Here you can see the latest activity on the website.
Google Tag Manager
If nothing is showing on the ‘Realtime’ reports, to check if Google Tag Manager is working:
When logged into Google Tag Manager, click ‘Preview’ in the top right corner. (See below)
After the preview mode has loaded, check the debug tab. Here you can see if the created
‘Google Analytics 4 - Install’ tag has worked. (see below)
